Our Review of the Nokia 2610

The Nokia 2610, released just over 2 years ago, feels dated in today's fast-changing world of super-massive smartphones and multi-function mobile platforms. The Nokia 2610, released just over 2 years ago, feels dated in today's fast-changing world of super-massive smartphones and multi-function mobile platforms. It boasts just 3MB of non-expandable internal memory, has no music playing or imaging features and no EDGE support. The 65K colour screen with its resolution of 128 x 128 pixels also feels very yesterday when put up against the 16 million plus colours of many of today's handsets.

The upshot? The 2610 is a phone is a phone is a phone. 3MB of memory sounds like peanuts next to the 8GB monoliths of today's bleeding edge, but in sensible persons' terms, 3MB equates to about 300 entries on your address book. Know anybody with a need for over 300 address book entries? Thought not. And as for the display, well even Nokia have admitted that anything beyond QVGA resolution (320 x 240) on a small screen is ridiculous. And besides, the 2610 screen displays everything it needs to (names, numbers, messages) more than adequately.

Whilst the 2610 doesn't have 3G or EDGE capabilities, good old GPRS is shoehorned into the 104 x 43 x 18 body, meaning that mobile email is a possibility – you can easily load the WAP 2.0/XHTML browser via the dedicated Internet key, giving you access your email account and check up on other basic features such as news and weather using the WAP browser.

The keypad is of the tried and tested Nokia design – numeric keypad with the two call and cancel buttons set underneath a 4-way menu key with two additional menu buttons set aside this. Unfussy, uncluttered and above all user-friendly. The 2610 doesn't rock the boat when it comes to form either – an old school candybar with no opening, sliding and moving components.

Downsides include the fact that it's unfortunately only a dual-band phone, which means if you're planning to go anywhere abroad other than Europe, you might want to check something else out. Dissapointingly, there is also no support for Bluetooth or USB, and so whilst the 2610 does support polyphonic MP3 tones, there is no chance of you being able to easily swap audio files with your mates.

The Nokia 2610 is as basic and straightforward as you can get when it comes to a mobile phone; it's a utilitarian's dream.

That said, switching between the two bands is seamless, unlike many of the first dual-band phones which needed to be switched on and off again a million times before the transition could be made.

Alternatively, if you want a phone for going abroad to the continent on and are worried about taking a does-everything smartphone with you, then snapping up a 2610 and buying an international SIM card for Europe is very a cost-effective solution. Of course, you won't be able to take any holiday snaps on the phone, but then again, you could always take a camera...

The Nokia 2610 is super cheap and so makes an ideal purchase for an emergency back-up phone; keep a spare 2610 on you with a PAYG SIM pre-loaded with credit for such circumstances.

 Pros

A straight up mobile phone. No messin!
Ultra reliable handset.
Ideal for emergency situations.

 Cons

Virtually no features whatsoever!

Nokia 2610 Review

Review by: zain from , 13th December 2008

This phone is a great phone if all you want from a phone is calls and texts. It is also a good value for money and its supercheap price(around £20) is another asset. Moreover, it is also very reliable and would be great as a spare phone but I don't think it would be great as your only phone. This is because it has no features whatsoever and it isn't stylish either. On the other hand, it has good battery life. Overall, I would only recommend this phone to someone who hasn't has a phone yet.
