Whilst the 6151 is solid looking and boasts a no-nonsense, business like design, its features are a bit of a let down. A music player and support for wireless stereo headsets are its saving grace.

Our Review of the Nokia 6151 Black

The handset is a traditional black candybar design which comes decorated with neat chrome trimming which surrounds the display and keypad. The design of the phone is resolutely spartan and unfussy.

The Nokia 6151 Black is another of the very early 3G smartphones still doing the rounds today. The handset is a traditional black candy bar design which comes decorated with neat chrome trimming which surrounds the display and keypad. The design of the phone, typical of Nokia of this time, is resolutely Spartan and unfussy – simple, straightforward standard design with an emphasis on efficiency before anything else.

The screen is a 1.8" 262K colour display, which has a screen resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, and sits atop the traditional Nokia style keypad, that is a typical numeric keypad beneath a 5-way directional menu key, two keys for call and cancel (the green and red ones), and two context sensitive menu keys (the blue ones). The 6151 certainly isn't on the slim side; its dimensions are 108 x 47 x 19 mm. Those 19 millimetres around are really noticeable, especially when typing out a text message – whilst the keys aren't packed terribly close together, texting one handed is a bit of a nightmare.

As one of the early 3G phones, you can forgive the 6151 for not being a fully loaded smartphone beast primed with cutting edge features and specs. Whilst 3G compatible, browsing on the 6151 is nowhere near as fast as anything available today (no HSDPA) and web pages are hard to read on the small 1.8" screen, and a 5-way direction key is not the best tool to use for panning across pages on a tiny screen. Whilst there is a rear-mounted 4 x digital zoom 1.3 Megapixel camera (pretty old hat even in 2006), there is no front-facing secondary camera, thus ruling out the possibility of video calling which would have been possible over a 3G connection.

However, what it does do it does well. Downloads and data transfer between devices is fast, and mobile email works well enough, although the screen size again, feels restrictive, and there is no attachment viewer. The user can play video clips in 3GPP, H263 and MPEG4 formats, and the MP3 player boasts crisp, clear sound quality. Audio files supported include MP3, AAC and M4A. As well as coming with poly tones, the 6151 also allows you to assign MP3s and AACs as ringtones. Should you tire of your tracks, you can also switch to the built in FM radio. Bluetooth 2.0 comes on board with A2DP, allowing you to pair a compatible headset for wireless stereo listening. The 30MB of internal memory can be beefed up by up to 2GB thanks to the memory card slot (microSD). USB connectivity is available, unfortunately through a Nokia Pop Port.

Battery life is also average considering the features; 4 and a half hours of talk time coupled with 340 hours of power in standby mode. We'd like to say that the 6151 is a good choice for the budget buyer who is just after a phone for calls and texts, but the unremarkable battery life and comparatively cramped keypad mean that the 6151 is probably best bought on Pay As You Go and used as a back-up phone.

 Pros

Decent music player.
Support for Bluetooth with A2DP.

 Cons

Brick-like design.
Below average camera.
