The Nokia 6600 Slide is the 6600 Fold's brainier sibling. Like the Fold, it's a Series 40 handset, which manages to pack a goodly number of features into its tiny, gleaming steel case, including an excellent 3.2 megapixel camera and a large hi-res OLED display. It also offers video calling, a music player, FM Radio and expandable memory up to 16GB. While lacking the intelligence of its aesthetic counterpart, the N96, the Slide is nonetheless a competent and easy-to-use mid-range phone.
Like the Fold, the Nokia 6600 Slide follows and elegant design, and fits neatly into your pocket or bag. It is compact, shiny and curvy, but weighing 110g feels quite solid to hold, due in part to its rear metal panel.
The bright, pin-sharp 2.2" OLED display is a good size and dominates the front panel. With 16 million colours and QVGA resolution it renders images with stunning clarity. A five-way navigation pad and two soft call keys are located below the display. The phone springs open with a satisfying click to reveal a neat keypad flush with the back panel. The keypad feels a tad cramped and plasticky, and the keys are a little too closely spaced for comfort, though they are at least regularly shaped and a generous size.
The Nokia 6600 wins over the Fold in terms of its superior 3.2MP snapper, which shoots in a maximum resolution of 1536x2048 pixels. A dual-LED flash means that pictures taken in low light will get some extra illumination, though coverage is not always consistent, and the autofocus function improves image quality further. Basic photo editing software enables you to play around with the brightness, colour and white balance, and packs in a self-timer, various capture modes and a handful of picture effects.
The camera doubles up as a video camera, shooting footage in VGA quality at 15fps or QVGA at 30fps in either MPEG4 or 3GPP format. Considering its ranking, the handset produces surprisingly polished videos which can then be uploaded to video sharing sites such as YouTube. Usefully, a second VGA camera located on the phone's front panel is available for making video calls.
The music player is pretty standard Nokia fare, supporting most major file formats - MP3, AAC, AAC , eAAC and WMA – as well as a handful of equaliser modes to boost audio output. A measly 20MB of internal memory means you’ll have to invest in an additional microSD card if you plan to use your phone as an MP3 player. Nokia supply a small 512 MB memory card with the phone, which is enough for around 120 MP3 music tracks, or 200 in AAC format, but the serious music lover will probably be after something heavier. An FM Radio offers an alternative source of music entertainment.
Another cool feature is the phone's accelerometer. Tap the phone twice to display the time; tap it once to mute the ringtone or silence the alarm.
With 3G download speeds and the superb Opera Mini web browser preinstalled along with Macromedia Flash Lite 3.0, surfing the internet with the 6600 Slide is a breeze. It’s just a shame that Nokia couldn't have stretched to faster HSDPA connectivity. Websites display clearly on the 2.2" screen, as well as videos and images, and Email support comes with a document viewer for looking at attachments, but no editor. A handy collection of mobile apps include a stripped-down version of Nokia Maps for basic directions and location search, Yahoo! Go, Flickr for easy picture uploads and Nokia Widsets web-based application shop.
The Slide 6600's features are unlikely to blow you away, but for a mid-range handset it is capable, reliable, and comes with some cool tricks.
