If you're looking for a mid-range Nokia mobile phone with plenty of features, sorry to disappoint but you'll have to search elsewhere. Whilst the Nokia 7100 Supernova, priced around £60, isn't expensive, it really doesn't seem to offer much for your cash.
The 7100 is a dual-band GSM phone featuring a 1.3 megapixel camera, an FM radio, basic music player, 240 x 320 pixel display, Bluetooth, an email client and web browser - and that's about the lot. Since there's no memory card slot, music lovers will be hard-pushed to use the phone as an MP3 player. The handset is one of a new range of Nokia devices aimed at 'emerging markets', and can provide information about the agriculture, pricing of produce, etc.
Supernova handsets are generally pretty stylish, but this one simply doesn't impress on the looks front. Whilst navigation key, available in 'Jelly Red' or 'Fresh Blue' may add some interest, the handset as a whole looks plasticky and chunky. At 104 grams, it is quite heavy and the maximum talktime is just 3.5 hours, which is pretty short.
The 2" TFT display dominates the front panel. With 320 x 240 pixel resolution and up to 65,536 colours, images are colourful but not as sharp as you would expect on higher-end phones. Directly below the screen are the colourful call and end buttons and a navigational key. The back panel slides out to reveal a glossy numeric keypad with ridged buttons - less fiddly to use than the flat keys which are becoming the norm for mobiles today.
The stingy 1.2MP camera is less than impressive with no flash and no autofocus. Pictures taken away from direct sunlight turn out grainy and indistinct - you'll certainly need to take a separate digital camera for your holiday or family snaps. A full-screen viewfinder in landscape mode helps you snap away with accuracy.
An integrated music player supports a small number of file formats - MP3, Midi, AAC, WAV, and AMR and comes bundled with a proprietary headset, which also acts as the antenna for the handset's FM Radio. You can also turn your tracks into MP£ or AAC ringtones.
The 7100 Supernova supports SMS, MMS version 1.3 and email, and comes with T9 predictive text for fast messaging.
In terms of connectivity, the 7100 Supernova runs a simple WAP browser, Opera Mini 4, and offers reasonably fast internet over EDGE. Bluetooth 2.0 is available for transferring data between compatible devices, and there is also a USB slot.
To sum up, the Nokia 7100 Supernova is a cheap phone, but with such a mediocre feature set you'd be hard-pushed to describe it as value-for-money. If you're simply interested in a phone for talking and texting then this could be the one for you; then again, it might be worth investing a little more in one of Nokia's many basic handsets and getting significantly more for your money. Nokia say that the 7100 Supernova should be available before the end of the year.
