There's a lot missing in terms of functionality - no memory card slot, no 3G - but the 8600 Luna's fetching design and superb build quality may be the deciding factor for those who just want a phone for calls and texts.

If you liked the Nokia 8800 Sirocco, chances are you'll be over the moon with the 8600 Luna, another addition to Nokia's 8-series premium segment.
A sibling phone to the equally stylish Nokia 8800 Sirocco; chances are if you liked the 8800, you'll be over the moon with the 8600 Luna, another addition to Nokia's 8-series premium segment. From a tech perspective, there's nothing really flashy about either the Sirocco or the Luna; their appeal lies primarily in their design and appearance, and you can't really fault Nokia on their approach to aesthetics and build quality here.
The 8600 Luna is a wafer-thin Quad-Band slider constructed from stainless steel. Its glossy black plastic casing is complemented by a sliding smoked glass keypad cover, which gives the handset a very distinctive allure. Aware that such highly reflective surfaces also make for great fingerprint magnets as well as mobile phone exteriors, Nokia have thoughtfully included a static-free polishing cloth with the Luna, similar to the one that comes bundled with the LG Prada. The sliding mechanism is robust and should remain un affected by repeated use. The keypad itself responds well, individual keys depress nicely and definitively.
The weight of a handset is a funny thing. For many people, a comparatively heavy phone can be a turn off, whilst for others, a weighty handset lends the phone an air of durable solidity. For better or worse, the Luna weighs in at 140 grams, unsurprising, considering all that steel which makes up its chassis.
The 2.0" TFT display is impressive, pumping out images in 16 million colours and rocking with a screen resolution of 240 x 320. Thoroughly legible, fonts come out great and the screen shows up well even in sunlight. Many of the phone's functions can be accessed using the exterior buttons even when the slider is shut. The handset is a solid 140g thanks to its stainless steel casing, which will suit some more than others.
As we said, the Luna's functionality is deliberately middle of the road; its main purpose is to be a mobile phone which looks good, and it does do that very well. That said, it dies come with a brace of basic multimedia functions such as a 2 Megapixel camera and a music player and is handles these adequately.
The music player can cope with most of the major file formats, that's MP3, AAC and AAC+, but not enhanced AAC+ or WMA. It sounds fine on the supplied speakers, and integrated stereo Bluetooth means you can listen to tracks via a wireless headset, and comes with an FM radio. However, with only 128MB of internal memory (enough for about 30 songs) and no option of expansion with a memory card, the Luna could in no way pass as a serious music phone. The 2 megapixel camera is particularly average, producing some pretty basic images with pale colours and too much noise.
As mentioned above, the Luna supports wireless Bluetooth 2.0. Data can be transferred over Class 10 GPRS and EDGE, and PC sync is offered via micro USB. Whilst the Luna comes with support for mobile email, those who want a phone specifically for this will be much better off looking elsewhere.
Very sharp and stylish design.
Manufactured from high-grade materials.
More than a bit lacking feature-wise.
Limited internal memory and no card slot.
There's a lot missing in terms of functionality - no memory card slot, no 3G - but the 8600 Luna's fetching design and superb build quality may be the deciding factor for those who just want a phone for calls and texts.

Review by: Noaf from London, 18th December 2007
I went and got myself a Nokia Luna as soon as it came out.. and have loved it ever since I first laid eyes on it!
The style and design are outstanding and the battery life is surprisingly good for a Nokia! The only thing I think could do with improvement are the features, especially the camera. There's no light, no flash and the night mode is super slow, but hey, nothing's perfect!
My verdict: The Luna is a good, reliable and stylish phone!
