When released back in August 2006, the Nokia N73 raised the bar for camera phones in terms of image display quality and screen size; pictures taken on the 3.2 megapixler looked stunningly pin sharp on the 2.4" TFT screen, and still do. With its rear mounted Carl Zeiss enhanced sliding lens cover camera, the design of the N73 undoubtedly paved the way for Nokia's immensely successful N95 in months to come, and takes pride of place as one of the UK's first and foremost 3G smartphones.
You can print pictures out at home or at work, or share them during calls with Nokia's Xpress share software, or upload them to your blog, Myspace or Facebook page thanks to the excellent browser.
The N73's camera mode is engaged simply by sliding the cover open; picture taking is made easy by way of the handy toolbar which enables you to effortlessly adjust the flash, colour effect and exposure of your shot. A diode flash with red-eye reduction and autofocus come equipped, allowing you to easily take shots in the gloomiest of environments with minimal adjustments. A secondary VGA camera is installed on the front of the phone in the top right corner – this enables videocalls to be made over a 3G network.
You can share your photos with friends and family in any number of ways – you can either transmit pictures wirelessly using Bluetooth 2.0, or to any USB compatible platform by way of the Pop-Port USB 2.0 socket – you can print pictures out at home or at work, or share them during calls with Nokia's Xpress share software, or even upload them to your blog, Myspace or Facebook page thanks to the excellent browser.
The 2.4" screen isn't just ideal for viewing and taking pictures – the high powered WAP 2.0 browser visualises pages practically instantly, and the main screen cursor is controlled by the joystick (more on this below); simply move the pointer to the margins of any page to scroll down and move the cursor to the desired link and press down on the joystick to click.
The N73 paved the way for the smartphones of the future, including Nokia's immensely successful N95.
The keypad of the phone features a joystick set in the centre of four context keys – the joystick control admittedly takes some getting used to if you've not used one before; it's not the most ideal menu navigation solutions, and unsurprisingly, this is one of the last Nokia models to feature such a control interface. That aside, the static context keys and the numerical keys all depress nicely with a definite precision, so that mistakes in text messages are few and far between.
Despite all of it technical flashiness and innovations, the design of the N73 is resolutely traditional – a compact candybar handset with some not exactly pocket-stretching dimensions (110 x 49 x 19 mm). It has a trapezoidal shape when viewed from the top, which is actually more ergonomic than it appears, which helps somewhat with the main keypad.
The Nokia N73 also features a built-in media player which supports MP3, AAC and MPEG4 files (no WMA support though) and comes with an FM radio with stereo speakers. When you combine this with the 42MB of internal memory and a miniSD card slot you can see the waves that the arrival of the N73 made in today's mobile market. It is still a decent, solid smartphone ideal for mobile email on a shoestring, but if you're after a camera with more punch, then check out the plethora of next gen smartphones which the N73 helped pave the way for.

I absolutely loved this phone. Brilliant sound and the feautre telling you who is calling without having to dig the phone out of your bag was brill especially handy when driving and using your hands free. I had two problems with it firstly from time to time the actual phone got really hot and the battery died and the other was now and again it wouldn't let me send or receive textes saying that the memory was full and that i would have to delete some data. The memory was not full but after deleting data it still would not work. If I then left the phone alone for a couple of days it would start working again. A real shame to what otherwise was a brill phone.

This is supposed to be a solid and reliable phone. I had to return mine because it kept turning itself off. This is apparently due to contact with moisture, which can be caused by leaving the phone in the kitchen. My phone has never been in water or used in a steamy environment, but I now have to buy a new one. Not good.
