Nice looking black tablet handset with a good roster of multimedia features, which is ultimately let down by the fiddly keypad, which requires a lot of patience for you to master.

The all new Nokia N78 has the unenviable task of replacing the incredibly popular N73, which is still the biggest selling 'N series' handset to date. Even selling more than the mighty N95.
The all new Nokia N78 has the unenviable task of replacing the incredibly popular N73, which is still the biggest selling N-Series handset to date. Even selling more than the mighty N95. So it's fair to say that the N78 has its work cut out to make sure that it doesn't go the same way as most sequels (Godfather 3, Batman & Robin, the list goes on...). In terms of form and looks Nokia have again looked to the N82 for inspiration. The N78 is a traditional candy bar shape with curves edges at the top and bottom of the handset. It all looks very inoffensive and fairly bland. Until you stop to look at the keypad.
Nokia have gone for a very distinctive style of keypad on the N78 which is admittedly novel but is sure to totally enrage users. The keypad is divided into four small bars with each part of the bar corresponding to a number (the left hand edge of the top bar is one and so on). The symbols for the numbers light up when the keypad is in use, which makes the phone really look like a digital camera. Needless to say this keypad, although it's an innovative idea, is going to lead to a huge amount of textual misunderstandings and repeated pressings of the 'Cancel' key.
The camera on the Nokia N78 is a 3.2 Megapixel affair with Carl Zeiss optics, LED flash and autofocus. While it won't worry the N96 or the Samsung Soul, the N78 puts in a reasonable performance under most lighting conditions. However the video recording facility is not the best but it is to be expected that as the N78 doesn't bill itself as a high end camera handset. Put simply, the N78 will do the job of a camera phone but it's not the phone's core function.
However, the N78 does have an inbuilt multimedia player at the core of its functionality. The media player can handle MPEG-4, MP3, AAC and WMA files and to round out the roster of features there is also an FM radio with integrated stereo speakers and HSDPA compatibility. The N78 also has an FM transmitter which means you can play your music on a radio. However there are some legal issues with FM transmitters in this country so this feature may be phased out at launch.
The N78 has an integrated FM radio along with the excellent media player software.
The N78 comes in at the same price range as the five megapixel phones, yet it has less features.
